Three German backpackers who testified at the inquiry.

’Three German backpackers say they were ripped off by harvest contractors in NSW.

Erik Richter, Hanna Gebert and Jonas Ratz gave evidence at the Victorian Inquiry into the Labour Hire Industry and Insecure Work in Shepparton last week.

The backpackers spoke anecdotally about being underpaid by contractors, being treated unfairly and their employers not abiding by regulations.

They weren’t getting paid properly by a contractor in Griffith, NSW, and were bound by excuses including: ‘‘It’ll get fixed’’ or ‘‘I don’t know you — you’ve never worked for me.’’

The backpackers also called for Fair Work Australia to make the inquiries page more user-friendly and easier to understand for people speaking English as a second language.
